Your air conditioner might do its main job by keeping you cool. But sometime it can cause a discomfort in the form of allergies. These allergies could range from sneezing, coughing, rashes to dizziness. If you or a family member are facing these allergies and suspect that your air conditioner is responsible, you must continue reading below. We will show you why your air conditioner may be causing allergies and how to fix it…
Bad filter:
Your filter is the first thing you must check. The job of the filter is to keep out allergens that are pulled in along with the air. If allergens are somehow making it into your house your filter is most likely doing something wrong.
Remove the filter and check for damage. If you notice something wrong with the filter, change it. If everything seems okay, then find out what the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating of the filter is. MERV rating is a scale used to determine the effectiveness of a filter. The higher the rating of the filter, the more particles it will keep out. The rating starts from 1 and goes till 20.
If your filter has a low MERV rating, it could be the reason why you’re suffering from allergies. Try replacing it with a filter with a high MERV rating. Another option is to go for the high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filter. These filters remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles which are 0.3 microns or more in diameter.
Always contact your AC brand or your AC repair expert before you switch your filter to ensure the filter will be compatible with your model. Not all filters work with all air conditioners.
Dirty ducts:
Your air ducts could be another reason why you are suffering from allergies. Sometimes due to the formation of condensation in the ducts an ideal environment for the growth of mold is created. This mold is a serious health hazard and can lead to several allergies. You need to get this immediately cleaned by an air conditioner repairman. Contact us today at East Texas Refrigeration as we can help you with this.
Air purifiers are another tool that can help keep your air allergen free.
Bad filters and dirty ducts usually cause most air conditioner related allergies. Fix them and the allergies may disappear. You might also need to visit your doctor to get your allergies checked as your air conditioner isn’t always responsible.
